PLAYING

A round is traditionally made up of 18 holes, which are played in a specific order, dictated by the design of the golf course. On a 9 hole course, players play two consecutive 9 hole rounds. A hole of golf comprises of striking a ball from a tee to a designated target area, marked with a flag. The player continues to strike the ball until they are able to place the ball in to the cup/hole.

Combinations of golf clubs are used depending on the required distance and shot. Once the golf ball is on the green (small area of short, well kept grass surrounding the hole), the player will use a putter to carefully putt the ball into the cup/hole. The player who is able to sink the ball with the least amount of shots/strokes is the winner.

Golf is a multi-player game. Players either walk from hole to hole or they will ride in a golf cart. A caddy will often accompany each golfer. A caddy is a person who carries the golfers clubs and who also gives advice on the game, such as where to place the pin, what club to select, and hole distance.

There are two recognized types of golf play:

1. Stroke play
This is where players record how many shots they take to complete each hole. After completing the course, the player with the lowest score wins. Players are penalized and will have shots added to their score if they violate any golf rules.

2. Match play
This can either be played in doubles or in teams. In this style of play, each hole is played as separate game. Once the round has been completed, the persons, or team, winning the most amount of holes is classed the winner.
